The book of The Danish Cemeteries of the Virgin Islands was commissioned and paid for by the Danish Cemetery Restoration Fund, a fund with the sole purpose of maintaining, repairing and restoring the three Danish Cemeteries located in the United States Virgin Islands. Through the support of the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and generous donations from both corporate and private benefactors, the Danish Cemetery Restoration Fund has been able to continue the monumental tasks of preserving these historical grave sites so they may be visited and studied for years to come.
This project was begun in the spring of 1999 and is a work in progress, gladly accepting any additional information submitted concerning the persons laid to rest in the Danish Cemeteries. Originally intended to include on the Danish Cemetery in St. Thomas, the project has expanded to incorporate the Danish Cemeteries in Christiansted and Frederiksted, St. Croix as well. The writing and photographs were complied by Andrew Luscz, a student at Antilles School in St. Thomas who has been working with the Royal Danish Consulate to complete this work. We trust that you will find the information interesting as many of the grave markers shed light on the days of pirate ships and early life in the Danish West Indies.
